As Nigeria observes the 2024 International Children’s Day, the Idimuwem Peace and Governance Initiative (IPGI) is urging Nigerians to focus on building children’s capacity for peace and effective conflict management.
Uduak-Abasi Akpabio, the convener of the IPGI Peace Art Competition, emphasized the importance of children in fostering peace in Nigeria in the long run. Speaking at the Peace Tale Competition in Abuja on Monday, Akpabio highlighted that children aged 8-10 can actively engage in discussions about peace and conflict resolution. He emphasized that laying the groundwork for peace and effective conflict management must begin early, with a focus on children and young people.
The call by IPGI underscores the significance of investing in the next generation and empowering children to become advocates for peace in their communities and beyond. By nurturing their understanding of peacebuilding and conflict resolution from a young age, Nigeria can foster a culture of peace and tolerance that will contribute to a more peaceful and prosperous future.
The conversation on peace is critical for Nigeria, particularly in light of the security challenges facing some parts of the country. According to Uduak-Abasi Akpabio, convener of the IPGI Peace Art Competition, initiating this conversation with children is essential.
Akpabio emphasized the importance of early intervention in building capacity for peace and effective conflict management. IPGI’s mandate includes engaging children and young people in peacebuilding efforts, recognizing their potential to contribute meaningfully to this endeavor. The Peace Art Competition, targeted at children aged 8-10, provides a platform for children to engage with peace and conflict issues in a way that is accessible and enjoyable for them.
The initiative includes the development of peace education curriculum materials tailored to children’s understanding and interests. This approach aims to reinforce messages of peace and unity while empowering children to think critically about these concepts.
Precious Essien, Programmes Officer of the Youth Alive Foundation, emphasized the importance of teaching conflict resolution skills to children from a young age. She highlighted how conflict resolution equips young people with the tools to navigate disagreements and build healthier relationships. The objectives of the peace art competition align closely with the foundation’s goals of promoting peace and harmony among young people.
Representatives from the Embassy of Belgium underscored the universal desire for peace, emphasizing the role of art in depicting and promoting peace. They encouraged children to express their understanding of peace through art, recognizing it as a powerful tool for communication and advocacy.
Overall, these initiatives reflect a collective effort to engage children in peacebuilding activities, recognizing their agency and potential as agents of positive change in society. By empowering children with the skills and knowledge to promote peace and unity, these initiatives contribute to building a more peaceful and harmonious future for Nigeria.
