Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen has voiced his criticism of David Raya’s performance in Arsenal’s recent 2-1 Champions League victory over Sevilla. Owen, speaking during post-match punditry for TNT Sports, expressed his concerns about Raya’s display, particularly noting a late scare when the goalkeeper nearly scored an own goal.
When asked if Raya’s recent mistake was a significant one, Owen commented, “Yeah. Listen, all eyes are on Raya at the moment. If you are consistently keeping clean sheets, no one would say anything. But due to past incidents, every action of his comes under scrutiny. People question if Ramsdale would have handled the situation differently and if they should be playing from the back.”
Owen pointed out a specific incident in the match, saying, “He came out for a cross, attempted to punch it, but the execution was a bit off, and it nearly ended up in his own net. He also had a couple of minor errors in the first half while trying to build up from the back.”
However, Owen emphasized that these critiques were somewhat nit-picking and praised Arsenal for their victory, stating, “But in the end, we are scrutinizing small details, and this result is excellent for Arsenal. I believe they would have been content with avoiding defeat tonight, but securing all three points puts them in a strong position.”
Arsenal secured a crucial victory against Sevilla in Spain, with goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus. Nemanja Gudelj managed to score a header for the La Liga side during the match.
