Awka—Nze Joe Muoghali, the Chairman of Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Nanka Ward 1, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, met a tragic fate on Saturday night. He was fatally attacked by masked assailants shortly after convening a gathering of YPP stakeholders in the region. The meeting was organized in preparation for an upcoming rerun election for the Orumba North and South federal constituency
The Court of Appeal mandated a rerun election in 13 polling units within Nanka Ward 1. This electoral redo involved Princess Chinwe Nnabuife from the YPP, initially declared the winner of the February 25 National Assembly election, and her rival, Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Nnabuife, deeply affected by the tragic event, recounted that after the Court of Appeal’s decision for a rerun, she instructed the late Muoghali to coordinate a gathering of stakeholders and supporters in the Ward to prepare for the upcoming election.
She shared, “We conducted the meeting on Saturday and later attended the wedding of a YPP executive member in Nanka Ward 1. Following that, I departed. Just an hour after reaching home, I received a distress call reporting that our party chairman had been shot by masked men. They labeled him a saboteur before firing at him.”
“He was swiftly taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive. Now, my concern is the fate of Nanka Ward 1 as we gear up for the court-ordered rerun election. Having lost our party chairman, who knows who their next target might be? In this unsettling situation, how secure is it for me to participate in the Nanka rerun, and what about the safety of my party members and supporters in the area?”
She appealed to law enforcement, stating, “I urge security operatives to promptly intervene, investigate the circumstances surrounding this murder, and identify those responsible for the reprehensible killing of the YPP chairman in Nanka.”
In response to the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, expressed unawareness of the event.
Nnabuife expressed admiration for Nze Muoghali, describing him as a remarkable individual. He fervently urged that those responsible for the heinous murder should be held accountable and face the full extent of legal consequences.
