Burna Boy, Rema win big at 2023 Billboard Music Awards

Burna Boy and Rema emerged victorious in the debut Afrobeats categories at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, held on Sunday, November 19.

Burna Boy clinched the prestigious Top Afrobeats Artiste award, triumphing over strong contenders such as Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Cameroonian sensation Libianca. This achievement marked a historic moment as Burna Boy became the inaugural winner of the newly-established Top Afrobeats Artiste category.

Simultaneously, Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ remix featuring Selena Gomez secured the accolade for the Top Afrobeats Song. The track faced formidable competition from Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Oxlade’s ‘Ku Lo Sa,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ and Victony’s ‘Soweto’ featuring Rema and Don Toliver, solidifying its position as the maiden winner in the Top Afrobeats Song category.

However, despite these victories, ‘Calm Down’ remix fell short in the Top Billboard Collaboration, Top Billboard Excl. U.S. Song, Top Billboard Global 200 Song, and Top Radio Song categories.

In terms of overall victories, American singer Morgan Wallen led the charts with an impressive 11 awards, closely followed by Taylor Swift, who secured 10 wins at the event.
