Former President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that after leaving office, he sustains himself through rental income from one of his houses in Kaduna State, underscoring the principles of accountability and transparency that should guide leaders during their tenure.
Speaking in Hausa at the All Progressives Congress (APC) caucus meeting in Katsina State on Saturday, Buhari emphasized that during his presidency, he did not enrich himself through corrupt means. Reflecting on the complexities of governing a country like Nigeria, he remarked that many Nigerians do not fully understand the challenges that come with leadership, and often resort to blaming leaders without considering these difficulties.
Buhari further clarified his modest lifestyle, explaining that he owns three houses: one in Daura, his hometown, and two in Kaduna. Out of these, he rents one property to support himself financially. He confidently stated, “After eight years as president, I have only three houses. One in Daura, two in Kaduna, and I rent out one for income to feed myself.”
He added that he feels healthier and more energetic since stepping down from office, noting that he now looks better than during his presidency, saying, “Anyone who sees me now can tell I look better than before.”
Buhari’s remarks served as a reminder of the need for leaders to prioritize honesty and transparency, both during and after their time in office, and to not succumb to the temptations of illicit wealth accumulation.
