On Wednesday, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu announced the arrest of suspected political thugs responsible for assaulting Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Ajaero had been attacked in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1 during a protest by state workers demanding unpaid salaries.
In response to the incident, the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had initiated a nationwide strike, calling for the apprehension of the assailants and their backers. Ribadu, through a statement from the Office of the National Security Adviser’s Head of Strategic Communications, Zakari U Mijinyawa, urged organized labor to end the ongoing strike.
Expressing concern over the strike’s potential impact on the livelihoods of Nigerians and the nation’s economic security, Ribadu condemned the assault on Ajaero as a violation of the rule of law and the principles of freedom of association and expression upheld by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration.
The statement assured the public that arrests had been made in connection to the attack on the NLC president, emphasizing a commitment to a thorough investigation. Ribadu pledged to disclose the investigation’s findings once concluded, reiterating the Federal Government’s stance against such acts and its dedication to upholding justice.
