President Bola Tinubu has declared a 50 percent reduction in fares for commercial buses operating on inter-state routes during the Yuletide season.
The Minister of Solid Minerals, Mr. Dele Alake, announced this development on Wednesday, highlighting that all train routes would be free from Thursday, December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. Alake clarified that air transportation was excluded, reserved for privileged individuals, and emphasized that the initiative aimed to alleviate transportation costs for the general public as a presidential intervention.
In the spirit of Christmas and year-end festivities, President Tinubu, expressing his care for Nigerians, granted approval for the federal government to intervene in lowering the expenses associated with public transportation. The goal is to enable fellow citizens who wish to travel to reunite with loved ones and visit their hometowns without the added stress and financial burden imposed by elevated transport costs during this period.
Alake stated, “The President is cognizant of the recent surge in inter-state transportation costs, including air travel. Traditionally, people cherish traveling to be with family and friends during Christmas and the year-end, a practice that has endured for generations. Globally, there is a noticeable increase in intra-country travel and the movement of people, goods, and services during this festive period, and transporters often capitalize on this gravitational pull to significantly raise fares.”
