The Federal Government has temporarily suspended several senior officials from the Nigerian Correctional Service amid bribery allegations connected to the well-known crossdresser Idris Okuneye, commonly referred to as Bobrisky.
A blogger named Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, claimed in widely circulated videos that certain officers from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accepted ₦15 million from Bobrisky to dismiss money laundering charges against him. These charges arose during his naira-spraying incident in April, which ultimately led to his six-month prison sentence.
Additionally, the blogger alleged that Bobrisky paid a significant sum to secure a preferred location within the prison.
Bobrisky has denied these allegations, and both the EFCC and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) have initiated investigations into the claims made by the blogger.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board announced that the officers’ suspensions were a response to a viral video detailing the alleged misconduct.
The statement, signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed, emphasized that the suspensions were meant to facilitate further investigation into the various claims, assuring that the findings would be made public upon completion.
The suspended officers include Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos State, and Sikiru Adekunle, DCC at the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kirikiri, Lagos State.
Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, stationed at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, has been suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the Custodial Centre to an external location.
Furthermore, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, DCC in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kuje, Abuja, has also been suspended for reportedly receiving payments on behalf of an inmate.
