Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has described his divorce from Melinda Gates as “the mistake I most regret,” reflecting on the challenges and impact of their separation.
In an interview with The Times, the 69-year-old billionaire acknowledged the difficulty of parting ways after 27 years of marriage, while sharing his optimism about the future.
Cherished Memories and Shared Achievements
Gates reminisced about the profound connection he shared with Melinda, emphasizing the life they built together.
“There’s something extraordinary about spending your entire adult life with one person. The shared memories, the depth of what you’ve accomplished together, and having children—it’s all quite special. She stood by me through it all.”
He admitted his aspiration to emulate his parents’ 45-year marriage and acknowledged Melinda’s significant role in raising their children—Jennifer, Rory, and Phoebe.
“I spent more time with the kids than my dad did, but the ratio was still 10:1, with Melinda doing most of the parenting.”
Navigating Life After Divorce
The couple announced their separation in May 2021, finalizing their divorce in August 2021. A significant shift followed when Melinda stepped away from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, a decision Gates found particularly challenging.
“When we divorced, it was incredibly difficult. Then she chose to step away from the foundation, which I found disheartening.”
Gates described the aftermath as one of the most difficult periods of his life.
“It has to be at the top of the list. The divorce was miserable for both Melinda and me for at least two years.”
A Commitment to Moving Forward
Despite their separation, the couple remains dedicated to co-parenting their adult children and maintaining an amicable relationship. Gates also highlighted their shared legacy in philanthropy through the foundation they co-created.
Reflecting on his journey, Gates noted the resilience needed to rebuild and expressed gratitude for the life he shared with Melinda, calling their time together “a wonderful experience.”
