The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a cautionary message to the prominent Igbo sociocultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, advising them not to obstruct the aspirations of Igbos who are advocating for Biafra.
IPOB remains steadfast in its pursuit of a Biafra referendum, despite the dissenting remarks from Barrister Augustine Amaechi, a high-ranking member of Ohanaeze, who expressed a preference for restructuring rather than a referendum, as advocated by IPOB.
IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, strongly criticized those opposing the idea of a Biafra referendum, branding them as self-serving politicians.
In a statement by Powerful, it is stated, “The global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has taken notice of the imprudent statements made by Barrister Augustine Amaechi, an Ohaneze Ndigbo chieftain based in Abuja, who asserted that Ohaneze Ndigbo desires restructuring, not a referendum.
“The handful of political opportunists within Ohanaeze Ndigbo advocating for restructuring should abandon that notion. Biafrans are adamant about having a referendum. IPOB, comprising members and supporters from around the world, represents more than 90% of Biafrans. We have unequivocally conveyed to the Nigerian government and the international community that Biafrans are eager for a referendum to decide, through democratic means, whether to remain in Nigeria or gain independence.
“This is our sole demand, and we will not waver from it: a UN-monitored referendum in Nigeria to ascertain Biafra’s independence. Once the Nigerian government acknowledges our democratic demand for a Biafra referendum, a significant aspect of Nigeria’s problems will be addressed.
“We will not issue further warnings to Ohanaeze. If this individual, Augustine Amaechi, is expressing his personal views, the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo must clarify this publicly. Otherwise, we will interpret his outbursts as the official stance of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, suggesting that Ohanaeze has been manipulated by those who oppose our people’s interests, aiming to obstruct the progress we are making in holding the Nigerian government responsible for the violent infringements on the fundamental human rights of Biafrans, the crimes against humanity, and the genocide being perpetrated against the Indigenous People of Biafra.”
