Bernabeu Magic: Real Madrid Tops Money League with Record-Breaking €1 Billion Season
The 2023/24 season saw Real Madrid reign supreme with a staggering €1.05 billion ($1.09 billion) in revenue, a massive €208 million lead over second-placed Manchester City (€838 million) – the largest gap ever recorded by Deloitte.
The Santiago Bernabeu’s transformation has been a game-changer. Matchday revenues soared to €248 million, a remarkable twofold increase. The state-of-the-art venue, boasting an undulating metal roof, expanded VIP areas, and a retractable pitch, has become a multi-purpose entertainment hub.
Pop icon Taylor Swift and the NFL have already graced the Bernabeu stage, showcasing its potential beyond football. However, the club has faced challenges, including noise complaints from residents, leading to temporary restrictions on concerts.
Club stadia are evolving beyond matchday venues,” emphasizes Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group. “They are now entertainment hubs, attracting new visitors, sponsors, and retail opportunities.”
Commercial revenue continues to dominate for the top 20 clubs, accounting for 44% of total income. Despite an 11% surge in matchday revenue, broadcast income remained stable at €4.3 billion across the “Big Five” leagues (England, Spain, Italy, France, Germany).
The Premier League’s dominance persists, with six English clubs among the top 10. Manchester United climbed to fourth (€771 million) following their Champions League return, surpassing Bayern Munich (€765 million). Barcelona slipped to sixth due to the ongoing Camp Nou renovation. Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea complete the top 10, despite the latter three missing out on the Champions League last season.
