Benue State Officials Deny Rumors of Reduced Minimum Wage for Workers
In a swift response to swirling rumors, the Benue State Government and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) have categorically denied claims that civil servants will be paid a mere N40,000 minimum wage. Speculation arose on social media after alleged statements from Governor Alia surfaced, suggesting this drastic cut from the legally approved N71,000.
Solomon Iorpev, the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity, and Communication, dismissed the claims as unfounded, emphasizing that the Governor has been on a working visit to China and could not have made such remarks. “The governor has been abroad since Monday, so where did this proposal come from?” he questioned.
Adding to the clarification, NLC Secretary Joshua Abimiku reinforced the government’s commitment to fair wages, stating that during negotiations, options included N70,000, N75,000, and N77,000, with a consensus reached on N75,000. He assured workers that all plans for implementation were in place and encouraged patience, as the new wage is expected to be rolled out this month.
