Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has stated that his former teammates Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva, and Riyad Mahrez lent him money after the club ceased his payments following his charges of rape and sexual assault, as revealed in an employment tribunal. Mendy is seeking £11.5 million in unpaid wages stemming from his suspension without pay after he was charged in August 2021.
The 30-year-old player was acquitted in 2023 of multiple charges of rape and attempted rape against him.
Although the club continued to pay Mendy after his initial arrest in November 2020, they contended that they were not obligated to continue payments once he was charged. This was due to bail conditions, which barred him from approaching the club’s stadium or training ground, as well as a suspension from the Football Association, which rendered him unable to fulfill his contractual obligations.
Court documents indicated that Mendy “quickly ran out of money,” leading him to sell his Cheshire mansion to pay for legal fees, bills, and child support after his wages were withheld.
