Bauchi Governor Abolishes Ministry for Local Government Affairs, Swears in New Commissioners

Bauchi State Government Restructures

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has dissolved the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. This decision follows the Supreme Court’s ruling that grants greater autonomy to local governments in Nigeria.

During a swearing-in ceremony for three new commissioners on Monday, Governor Mohammed explained the rationale behind the decision. He stated, “We have removed the former commissioner for health, Dr. Adamu Sambo, as part of our efforts to reduce the cost of governance and align with the Supreme Court’s judgment on local government autonomy.”

He further noted, “We will no longer have a commissioner for local government.”

This change is a direct response to the Supreme Court’s ruling, which rendered the ministry redundant. The previous commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Ahmed Aliyu Jalam, tragically passed away in a road accident four months ago. Additionally, two other commissioners resigned to run for local government elections in August.

The new commissioners sworn in are:

  • Sani Mohammed Dambam, appointed to the Ministry of Health
  • Zainab Babatakko, appointed to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development
  • Engr. Mohammed Abdulk, appointed to the Ministry of Commerce
