Victor Umeh, the senator representing Anambra Central, has dismissed efforts by those trying to persuade Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, to leave the party as a “wild goose chase.”
Speaking at the Labour Party stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, Umeh emphasized that Obi’s momentum in the 2023 elections was largely due to the Labour Party platform, and it would be ungracious for him to abandon the party now.
Amidst speculation that Obi is under pressure to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027, Umeh insisted that Obi is focused on strengthening the Labour Party rather than switching allegiances.
“Trying to lure Peter Obi away from LP isn’t the right approach. The Labour Party gave him the platform that the Nigerian people rallied behind. He’s better off building and solidifying the party for the future rather than abandoning it,” Umeh said.
The former national chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) praised Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti for their leadership in strengthening the Labour Party through the stakeholders’ meeting, which addressed pressing issues.
“We are pleased that matters affecting our party have been resolved. It’s essential to operate under recognized leadership, and that’s why it was crucial to address the concerns surrounding our former National Working Committee,” Umeh noted. He expressed gratitude to Obi and Otti for their courage in convening the meeting, which he believes has safeguarded the future of the party.
