ASUU’s Calabar Zone strongly opposes the Federal Government’s proposed Student Education Loan, condemning it as a potentially oppressive and burdensome measure. The union argues that such a loan scheme could lead to dire consequences for students, including debt enslavement, mental health issues such as depression, and tragically, even suicide.
During a press conference held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, ASUU’s Zonal Coordinator, Happiness Uduk, alongside all Chapter Chairmen of the zone, expressed deep concern over the proposed loan scheme. They highlighted the irony that individuals who themselves benefited from scholarships, meal subsidies, and other forms of financial assistance during their education are now advocating for policies that could harm current and future students.
ASUU reiterated its firm opposition to the Student Education Loan, emphasizing its commitment to protecting the interests of students and advocating for policies that promote their welfare. The union remains steadfast in its stance against what it views as unjust and detrimental measures that could further exacerbate the challenges already facing students in the country’s education system.
