Anti-corruption Campaign: Akpabio Requests Not to Be a Case in Point,” Says Akpabio to EFCC Chairman

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has cautioned the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, against using his name as an example in the fight against corruption.

During his Senate screening, Olukoyede mentioned Akpabio as an example in discussing a corruption case he was investigating. However, he promptly halted when he sensed the lawmakers’ reaction in the Upper Chamber.

Olukoyede began, “If we are investigating the Senate President, for example…” This elicited laughter from the lawmakers.

Amid the laughter, Akpabio humorously intervened, advising the EFCC nominee not to use his name as an example in a corruption investigation. Akpabio quipped, “I’m very pleased that the nominee wants to use the Senate President as an example. But Mr. nominee, leave the Senate President for now; look in this direction,” pointing at the opposition lawmakers’ seats.

After the jovial moment, Olukoyede continued his speech without mentioning anyone’s name, emphasizing that “if you are fighting corruption, you become the enemy of everybody.”

It is worth noting that Akpabio is facing allegations of misappropriating N108.1 billion, which is currently under investigation by the EFCC. The investigation was initiated following a petition by an Abuja-based lawyer and activist, Leo Ekpenyong. While the EFCC detained Akpabio over alleged fraud, he has consistently maintained his innocence.
