The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr. Dennis Otuaro, has vowed to enhance the role of women in fostering peace in the Niger Delta region. He made this commitment during a gathering of Niger Delta women in Warri, Delta State, themed “Niger Delta Women Empowerment: A Panacea for Peace, Stability, and Economic Growth in the Region.”
Addressing the cross-section of women leaders and activists, Otuaro emphasized that his administration would ensure the increased inclusion of women in the execution of the PAP mandate, particularly in peace-building efforts. He noted, “Women of the Niger Delta will play a vital role in the consultation process as we seek sustainable peace, stability, and economic growth.”
The meeting was part of a broader stakeholder engagement led by the PAP Office, involving traditional rulers, opinion leaders, and youth groups from across the region.
Prominent women in attendance included AnnKio Briggs, Ibiba Don-Pedro, Rosemary Naigba-Oduone, Rosebella Jackson, and Dr. Lolo Fubara Sax-Hailsham, among others. They joined in praising the PAP administrator for his inclusive approach.
Otuaro underscored that many women activists and female youths had made significant sacrifices in the Niger Delta struggle, suffering personal losses and being among the first casualties in the conflict. He highlighted that President Bola Tinubu shares this vision of empowering women, supporting both girl-child education and measures to enhance women-owned businesses for regional economic growth and peace.
Otuaro further revealed that under the PAP’s educational and vocational schemes, 780 women have been sent to universities abroad, 2,781 women enrolled in local universities, and over 1,000 women trained and empowered in vocational skills. The administrator reiterated his commitment to doing more for women in the region.
The women expressed their appreciation for the initiative, vowing not to engage in any protest that could disrupt the peace and pledging their support for the Tinubu administration and the PAP Office’s goals.
