The media team representing the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has firmly dismissed recent reports alleging that the monarch abandoned traditional rites midway through the coronation process.
Speaking with Saturday Vanguard, the team’s spokesperson, Bode Durojaiye, described the claims as “misleading” and “alarmingly deceptive.”
Misrepresentation of Facts
Durojaiye pointed out that the Alaafin has not yet commenced the traditional rites, which are scheduled to begin ahead of his official coronation on April 4, 2025.
“It is impossible for the Alaafin to abandon rites he has not even begun. The report itself acknowledges this fact,” he remarked, criticizing the sensational headline that misrepresented the content.
Government’s Full Support
The media representative reassured the public that the Oyo State Government is fully aware of the Alaafin’s plans and supports his decisions. He emphasized that once the rites begin, tradition mandates their uninterrupted completion.
“Tradition dictates that these rites must be completed without deviation,” Durojaiye explained, dispelling rumors of discord.
Why Did Oba Owoade Travel?
Durojaiye clarified the purpose of the monarch’s recent trip to Canada. “Oba Owoade returned to Canada to fulfill his professional obligations and ensure everything is in order before his coronation.”
This timeline aligns with the traditional and administrative preparations required for the coronation, he added.
A Call for Responsible Journalism
Urging the media to be cautious in their reporting, Durojaiye stated, “We must respect our rich heritage and the values that distinguish our society. Misrepresenting these elements only serves to undermine our cultural identity.”
He appealed to the people of Oyo and beyond to rally behind the new monarch. “Let us all come together to support Oba Owoade in the significant tasks ahead. Your involvement and backing are invaluable.”
