Ajaero: NLC and TUC halt strike, opting for additional negotiation talks.

The nationwide indefinite strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in protest of the brutalization of NLC president, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State on November 1, 2023, has been temporarily suspended. The decision was reached during an emergency joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja last night, allowing room for further negotiations on the underlying issues.

The suspension follows the intervention of the federal government, facilitated by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu. At a prior meeting held at Aso Rock, the NSA personally apologized for the attack on Joe Ajaero and assured that suspects had been apprehended, with detailed investigations underway.

During the meeting, the leaders expressed concerns about the strike’s impact on the fragile economy and national security. They faulted the Labour Minister for not intervening earlier and emphasized the right to strike as integral, citing International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions.

President of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo, speaking on behalf of labour, highlighted the discussions with the NSA, who made promises and appeals for the strike to be called off. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Simon Lalong, described the discussions as fruitful and ongoing, appealing for a swift resolution.

However, the NLC outlined six conditions that must be met before fully suspending the strike. These include the arrest and prosecution of individuals allegedly involved in the attack on Joe Ajaero, such as the Special Adviser to the Imo governor and other police officers and thugs. The union insisted on justice and criticized the National Industrial Court for issuing injunctions without proper dialogue.

Before the meeting, the NSA confirmed the arrest of suspects related to the attack and urged the unions to reconsider the strike for the sake of national interests. The former President of the NLC, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, criticized the strike, deeming it misplaced and not in the national interest. Oshiomhole suggested a more targeted approach to address specific issues rather than a nationwide strike.
