The Federal Government has pledged to finalize and deliver the remaining segment of the Abuja-Kaduna road by the close of 2024. This commitment comes amidst previous assurances made since the road contract was granted on December 20, 2018. Senator Dave Umahi, the Minister of Works, conveyed this recent commitment during a meeting with his ministry’s directors in Abuja.
Umahi emphasized the determination of his ministry to overcome any contractual challenges hindering the project, ensuring its completion for the benefit of the Nigerian populace before the end of 2024. He provided details, stating that approximately 1.7 kilometers remain to be completed in two sections of the Abuja-Kaduna road. The minister also addressed the funding issue, mentioning that the project falls under the presidential development fund initiative, sourced from recovered looted funds.
Umahi revealed ongoing discussions with the President regarding the road’s significance for Northerners. However, he pointed out that the initial project cost of N165 billion had escalated to N655 billion due to a review, and the contractor was now requesting an exorbitant N1.35 trillion, which the government could not afford. He expressed disapproval of the contractor’s demands and emphasized a reevaluation of the existing sub-grade.
Additionally, the minister highlighted plans to consider the first 40 kilometers to be constructed by Dangote under the tax credit scheme, focusing on concrete pavement. Despite the challenges, Umahi affirmed his strong commitment to completing the road within the year, emphasizing that regardless of obstacles, the project would reach fruition in 2024.
