Former captain of the Super Eagles, John Mikel Obi, has shared his insights on the team’s prospects leading up to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Mikel, a key figure in the Super Eagles’ triumph at the 2013 edition in South Africa, discussed the differences between the victorious squad from a decade ago and the current team aiming for a fourth AFCON title under the management of Jose Peseiro.
Highlighting the evolution of football over the past ten years, Mikel acknowledged significant changes in the sport’s dynamics. He emphasized the youthfulness of the present squad and noted a distinct shift in their style of play compared to the team of 2013.
Speaking to CAF’s Media, Mikel expressed optimism about the team’s performance, saying, “There is a lot of difference, isn’t it? Football has changed from ten years ago, and dogmatically, it has really changed. I think this group of players now is a very young team. They play a totally different brand of football, so let’s hope we can really see good performance by us, the Nigerian team.”
In the upcoming AFCON, the Super Eagles are set to contend with teams from Group C, including hosts Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
