AFCON 2023: Peseiro laments Super Eagles' unfortunate outcome in match against Equatorial Guinea

Super Eagles head coach, Jose Peseiro, expressed his belief that his team deserved a victory in their match against Equatorial Guinea. Despite dominating the game, the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by the Nzalang Nacional in their opening fixture at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.

Peseiro lamented the missed opportunities, particularly from Victor Osimhen and Zaidu Sanusi, attributing the draw to their team’s poor marksmanship. In a press conference, the Portuguese coach expressed disappointment, saying, “I’m not happy with the draw. I’m sad, and my players are sad. We are all sad because we deserved to beat our opponent.”

Acknowledging the inherent nature of missed chances in football, Peseiro remained optimistic about future opportunities. He emphasized the need for the team to create and capitalize on chances in upcoming matches. Peseiro commended the team’s overall performance, stating, “We played well and pushed our opponent back. I just hope we can maintain this same attitude in our subsequent games.”

Looking ahead, Nigeria’s next challenge at the AFCON 2023 finals is against the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on Thursday.
