Siyabonga Sanderson, a 22-year-old man, was apprehended in South Africa on charges of murdering his grandfather, Albert Sanderson (75). The arrest led him to appear before the Kabokweni Magistrates’ Court on Friday, November 10, 2023, facing charges of murder and obstructing justice.
The grim discovery of Albert’s body took place at their residence in Swalala near White River in Mpumalanga on November 9, 2023. Allegedly, on November 6, 2023, an altercation ensued between the accused and the deceased. The dispute erupted after the deceased rebuked Siyabonga for bringing various girlfriends to his home. Subsequently, Siyabonga physically assaulted his grandfather, leading to the latter’s demise. The accused then proceeded to bury Albert in a shallow grave behind the house.
During his court appearance, Siyabonga declared his intention to conduct his own defense, stating that he would not seek bail. Any change in this decision, he noted, would be met with opposition from the state due to the severity of the charges.
Currently in custody, the accused awaits further legal proceedings. The court has postponed the matter to January 30, 2024, allowing additional time for investigation.
