5 LASTMA officials dismissed due to corrupt practices.

Over the weekend, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) took decisive action, implementing termination of employment for five officials found guilty of corruption and issuing letters of reprimand to two others at the Oshodi branch in Lagos. These decisions were based on the recommendations of the Personnel Management Board sanctioned by the Lagos State Civil Service Commission.

A press release from Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, disclosed that the Commission ratified all recommendations made during its meeting on Tuesday, August 19, 2023. Out of the seven officials implicated, five faced termination due to corruption, while the remaining two received reprimand letters for unauthorized absence from their duty posts.

Bakara Oki Olalekan, the Acting General Manager of LASTMA, emphasized that these disciplinary measures align with the established rules outlined in the Lagos State Civil Service Rules and Regulations. He underscored the agency’s commitment to improvement, urging the public to share their experiences, positive or negative, and provide evidence where applicable to address perceived misdemeanors.

Oki encouraged road users in the state to adhere to traffic laws to avoid penalties stipulated by legislation. He assured the public that complaints would be promptly and impartially investigated. Currently, 14 other LASTMA officials facing allegations are undergoing administrative review.

Highlighting the importance of creating a Greater Lagos for everyone, Adebayo Taofiq stressed the need for collaboration in realizing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s objectives in the first pillar of the THEMES Plus Development Agenda, specifically focusing on Traffic Management and Transportation.

To facilitate communication, Taofiq provided various contact channels for the public to channel their complaints, emphasizing the commitment to investigating issues dispassionately and with urgency. Lastly, Oki urged motorists to comply with the Lagos State Transportation Sector Reform Law 2018 and revealed that cases against the remaining 14 indicted LASTMA officials are currently undergoing additional administrative review.
