2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Zimbabwe Coach, Brito, Expresses Desire to Defeat Super Eagles

Zimbabwe’s head coach, Baltemar Brito, expressed disappointment with the outcome of Sunday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, stating that his team deserved more.

The Warriors were held to a 1-1 draw by the more renowned Super Eagles at the Huye Stadium, Butare. Walter Musona gave the Southern Africans the lead in the 26th minute, but Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho secured a point for Nigeria in the second half.

Both the Warriors and Super Eagles have yet to secure a win in the qualifiers, having drawn their first two games. Brito believes his team should have emerged with maximum points from the match.

“We entered the game with the intention to win, and we expected to do so, but unfortunately, we ended up with a draw,” Brito expressed in his post-match press conference. “The players showed great determination, and their commendable performance is entirely to their credit. We had opportunities, and in football, it boils down to the team that converts chances into goals.”

He continued, “We scored a beautiful goal, while Nigeria had a couple of chances, but they didn’t create many opportunities in our box.”

Zimbabwe’s next match in the qualifiers is scheduled against Benin Republic in June 2024.
