Afrobeats artist Michael Adebayo Olayinka known professionally as Ruger has addressed the nature of relationships within the Nigerian music industry.
In a recent interview Ruger stated that authentic friendships in the industry are uncommon. He explained that most interactions are transactional with individuals primarily maintaining connections for personal benefit.
“One thing I wish I had known earlier is that genuine friendships are rare in this industry. At most an artist may have one or two true friends who remain supportive regardless of circumstances,” Ruger said during his conversation with interviewer Stanley.
He also cautioned artists against mistaking public support or popularity for loyalty.
“Everything operates as a business. People associate with artists based on what they can gain at the time. When that value diminishes, many of those connections end,” he added.
