A highly regarded monarch, Oba Adewunmi Odutala, the Onibudo of Ayetoro Budo-Ota in Ado-Odo Ota local government area of Ogun State, has emphasized the importance of the federal government focusing on locally-made products in 2024.
The monarch stressed that for Nigeria to attain prosperity, there should be a concerted effort to reduce the influx of goods from foreign countries into local markets, urging a greater emphasis on supporting and promoting products manufactured within the country.
These remarks were made during a special press briefing convened by Oba Odutala to provide advice to the Nigerian government for the year 2024.
In his statement, he emphasized the importance of the government focusing on the small details that impact the lives of ordinary citizens. He urged a promotion of locally-made goods in the year 2024 and advocated for investments in local manufacturers. Specifically, he called for a halt to the importation of Ankara fabrics, emphasizing the need to empower Ankara factories within Nigeria.
Expressing the desire for increased support for the local market, the monarch suggested that the government should invest in local markets to foster collective prosperity.
Additionally, the monarch appealed to the federal government to prevent the gradual decline of Nigeria’s local languages. Drawing a parallel with English and mathematics, Oba Odutala proposed that proficiency in local languages should be a prerequisite for admission to tertiary institutions. He recommended incorporating local languages as compulsory subjects in schools and government offices to foster a stronger connection with indigenous languages.
Highlighting the need for a cultural shift, the monarch stressed that relying solely on foreign languages for education doesn’t necessarily lead to academic success. He urged for a change in approach, citing examples of nations that prioritize teaching their children local languages, asserting that 2024 should mark a transformative shift in this regard.
Furthermore, the monarch directed a plea to President Bola Tinubu to address the tarnished government image and rebuild citizens’ trust. He stressed the importance of political officeholders fulfilling their campaign promises and emphasized that trust is integral to the success of any government endeavor.
In concluding remarks, Oba Odutala urged state and local governments to be accountable to the people in 2024. He encouraged them to prioritize the welfare of the masses, implement social welfare programs, and refrain from attributing failures solely to the federal government, suggesting a more collaborative and responsible governance approach.
