Enhancing Support for Survivors
In a significant move to strengthen the handling of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases, the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has teamed up with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Together, they hosted a retreat for Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) service providers in Abeokuta. This initiative aims to improve service delivery and create a supportive environment for survivors.
Empowering Frontline Service Providers
During the retreat, Commissioner Adijat Adeleye emphasized the crucial role of SARC service providers as frontline defenders against GBV. “You are not just delivering services; you’re providing a safe haven for survivors. Your empathy and ability to listen are vital for their recovery,” she stated.
Expanding Resources for Survivors
To enhance support for survivors, Adeleye announced the establishment of three new SARC Centres in Abeokuta, Ilaro, and Ijebu-Ode, complementing the existing center in Sagamu. These centers will offer a refuge for survivors seeking justice, as well as access to medical and psychological care.
Toll-Free Reporting Lines
The state government, in collaboration with UNFPA, has launched toll-free lines for reporting GBV cases. Survivors can now call 08000000666 and 08000000555 for immediate assistance and support.
Collaboration and Best Practices
In her welcome address, Permanent Secretary Adejumoke Adewole urged participants to seize this opportunity to exchange ideas and align with global best practices in combating GBV. She reiterated the government’s commitment to justice, compassion, and equality.
Commitment to Survivors’ Rights
Dr. Esther Shomefun, UNFPA’s Gender Reproductive Health Analyst in Ogun State, highlighted the importance of enhancing the skills of SARC service providers. “We must adopt a survivor-centered approach to ensure that every individual receives standard care and feels valued,” she said. Dr. Shomefun praised the collaboration between the state government and UNFPA, affirming their zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment.
