A 20-Year-Old University of Ilorin Student Takes Her Own Life After Loaning N500,000 to Her ‘Boyfriend’

Sanni Hameedat, a 20-year-old student at the University of Ilorin, tragically took her own life due to mounting pressures stemming from an unpaid loan of N500,000 from an online lending platform. According to an anonymous source who spoke with Vanguard on Wednesday, Hameedat was confirmed deceased at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH).

The source revealed that Hameedat resorted to consuming Sniper, a lethal pesticide, before her hostel mates called for an ambulance to rush her to the hospital. The underlying cause of her distress was her inability to meet the demands of loan sharks who had been relentlessly pressuring her after she defaulted on her repayment schedule.

As per the source, the sequence of events leading to this tragedy began with Hameedat’s mother entrusting her with a significant sum of money. However, she was defrauded by an individual she had met on Snapchat. This fraudster claimed to urgently need N400,000 for his mother’s purported breast cancer treatment. Hameedat, who had N1 million saved for her mother’s use, decided to lend her acquaintance the money in the belief that he would eventually repay her.

Regrettably, the person who borrowed the money abruptly ceased all communication, leaving Hameedat in a distressing situation when her mother needed the funds returned. In an attempt to resolve this financial crisis, Hameedat turned to loan apps to secure over N400,000, which she combined with her existing savings to fulfill the N500,000 debt to her friend.

Ultimately, she found herself ensnared in a cycle of debt, struggling to repay the borrowed money and grappling with financial difficulties. On the night of the incident, Hameedat informed those around her that she was going shopping around 11:00 p.m. Her roommate, who had gone to bed early (name withheld), later woke up to discover Hameedat in severe distress, vomiting, and foaming at the mouth. They rushed her to UITH, where she was pronounced dead, tragically succumbing to the effects of Sniper poisoning.

Meanwhile, the University of Ilorin’s management has initiated an investigation into this heartbreaking incident. Mr. Kunle Akogun, the institution’s Director of Information, confirmed that the university is aware of the incident and has been receiving reports via various social media platforms. He emphasized that the university is actively looking into the matter and will release further details to the public in due course.
